Just wondering - was there any mechanism to prevent the upper turret gunner from shooting off the vertical stabilizer? Seems like he would have to depress that low for a fighter coming in for a direct tail shot...

I had the privilge of sitting on the edge of a taxiway with my camera some twentyfive years ago when this awesome B-17 was rolling out at an airshow. The wingtip passing over my head and the rumble of those radials left an impression that cannot be described. Thanks for the link Mike.

Too bad no sound except the hokey music.

Every year at the Hillsboro air show we have a B17 fly low overhead since we are in the flight path. I can tell you when that happens, the low roar of those engines make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. It must have been Hell in Germany during the war, listening to a whole flight of them above, about to unload on you.
