The WWI helmet is just a modern version of the medieval kettle helm.

In the late 1990s I saw something pretty neat in lower Manhattan, of all places. At an "army surplus" store on Canal street, a composite helmet of some sort. Something ballistic had carved a few gouges all over the cranium, and in yellow crayon, the person doing the proof testing had circled the marks and written "9mm ball" "158 gr. 38 spl" etc...
