With the Cold War winding down (best rethink that one now), we didn't think we needed a deep water port to counter the Soviet fleet at Cam Rahn Bay in the aforementioned Vietnam. The devastation caused by the eruption at Mt. Pinatubo accelerated out withdrawal from NS Subic Bay, NAS Cubi Point and Clark AFB.
I spent over three years serving in the Philipinnes, and attended Jungle School (JEST) in Subic and was trained by the indigenous people of the Philippines (Negritos), whose fathers fought the Japanese during WW2.
The Philipppine people are warm, caring and fiercely loyal people. Asshats making derogatory comments never took the time to understand the people, their culture or history. Just what America needs, alienate yet more people. How's our Colonialism in the Middle East working out?
