Leah,

I was out looking for blog reports of the town hall and yours is the only one that comes up.

With your permission, and if you feel its okay, May repost this blog report onto Torontopedia.ca on a wiki page about the town hall?

I also run the T. city blog and I would like to ask if I may repost your blog report there with full a by-line name credit and link back to this url.

Leave a comment here, and let me know.

Thanks Leah,

~ HiMY! ~

Hi HiMY, thanks for your message -- it's totally fine with me as long as there's a link and credit! Thanks for your interest.

I bet more reports will surface -- and probably more snappily written ones too! I just wanted to get some notes out there for people who might have missed the event.

The people who are gentrifying this part of Bloor with their art gallery seem really angry about things like Florida's house in Rosedale - and there is a lot of general talk, based on your review, of classes and masses being overlooked -- but do any of the panel people go through Florida's research? Read some of his research in an undergrad class, and there is lots of analysis and numbers.

It seems no rigorous attempt is made to do this, it's more bluster and generalizations, again based on your review. Which is funny because they are upset with the "huckster" element but they are 1. key gentrifiers of neighbourhood (like, the worst of the "creative class") 2. left wing hucksters themselves full of bluster but no real, detailed and specific, analysis. I could take it seriously if it had more of the latter.

Are the parties fun at this gallery though? Always been intimidated to go in though I walk by often. Seems really hipster.

Hi Sarah 2,

Thanks for your thoughts.

I think your questions are ones that come up a lot in regards to these debates around Richard Florida and his theories.

You're right, not many stats are offered to counter Florida at these types of events. And that's definitely a problem.

But while artists and other creative types are not always strong on statistics, they are very strong on intuitive analysis and the truths that can (though not always do) lie in the symbolic. That may be the exact kind of analysis that annoys you, which I can understand is frustrating, but it is what artists have to offer.

If you are looking for more statistically based or academically rigorous critiques, you might want to try the following:

UWisconsin's Jamie Peck: http://tinyurl.com/kn9p7z

UChicago's Terry Nichols Clark: http://tinyurl.com/mmw54h

City Journal's Steven Malanga:

As for the Toronto Free being "frighteningly hipster" -- I appreciate your franknes, but -- if you're gonna slag some people for ragging on Rosedale stereotypes, I think you gotta let some other stereotypes go too, no? Unless you've got some stats to support the hipster quotient. : - )
