Wow, this is great! Excellent tips, as I contemplate the very real possibility of some school visits coming up (probably not until late in the year/early next year, but I think I'll need that time to psych myself up...).

As a recently debuted author this list is the best thing I've seen on the subject...maybe ever. Love it!

This is such a great post, Camille. I've already heard a couple authors say they're printing it out for future reference... perhaps the ultimate compliment in the internet age!

I hope it is helpful. Every school is different but these are things I always like to see. I KNOW how much time it takes to put together a presentation and how much energy and stamina it takes to deliver and project your work, your thoughts and yourself into an auditorium, cafeteria or library. It is hard work.

Thanks so much for this, especially the questions section. Not only was it very funny, but I had never thought about kids forgetting their hands were up!

This is absolutely delightful and humorous to boot! YOU should be writing children's books!!! I am about to do my first school visit on Monday here in Pennsylvania, if we don't get the big ice storm they are predicting. I'm incorporating lots of your ideas into my presentation, and will try to work in the word "underpants" as often as I can.... :)

Fantastic advice. I'm still nervous (...terrified) about doing my first school presentation in a couple of months but this makes me slightly calmer. I will be copying this for future reference.

Jemma,
It can be nerve wracking at first but I promise you it gets easier every time. The thing to remember is everyone wants you to succeed, the kids, the teachers the librarians. Best of luck to you!

I have an upcoming author visit for my first book and DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE as to what I was going to do (so naturally I have having a minor stroke!). I came across your post today and I feel like I have some direction. Thanks so much for posting this!
