Thanks for posting this. I worked with Kate about a decade ago, in a used bookstore. It was just as Winn Dixie was coming out. She has a dry sense of humor, and is as funny and self-deprecating in real life as she is at her readings. Once, when I told her that Tiger Rising was my favorite book of hers, she said, "That's what all writers say." And when I see her, about once a year, usually by chance, she never fails to ask about my writing. If you haven't seen her in person, you should. She's a treasure.
Her acceptance speech for the Texas Bluebonnet Award for Because of Winn-Dixie is the stuff of legend. All these years later, people are still looking for a video or transcript of her talk.
