Technology has the power to change the world for the better, which is why we want to inspire more young people in Asia to not just use technology, but create it.

The Google Roots in Science and Engineering (RISE) Awards were set up to help address this challenge globally, and we’re happy to announce that in 2014, two organizations from Asia Pacific have been awarded grants for their programs that will encourage more young people to pursue careers in tech. We especially like these initiatives because they’re built around youth who aren’t exposed to much technology in their education.

Engineers Without Borders in Australia will create and pilot new high school workshops to nurture more coders. They will do this partially by reaching out to students not traditionally engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs. Life is Tech! in Japan will enable more teenagers without access to computer science in their schools to take part in mobile app development classes and summer camps. The goal is to focus outreach especially to girls.
