I'm a little confused about the complete difference between semiotics and iconography. They seem similar, or at least very linked to me. He says that they both ask the same "fundamental questions" (92). Are the answers that different? Van Leeuwen says that Barthian analysis doesn't use "textual analysis and contextual research," but I thought we had discussed in class that the sign could be textual - like the text on the Pottery Barn catalog. Can someone please explain this difference to me? What am I missing?

Nellie Cooman? Who on earth is that? This book is only six years old! I had always thought of an icon as something more permanent, but apparently I was wrong. I thought that was pretty funny too. Be careful what examples you use in an academic article.
