A lot of this sounds like the US as far as lobbying, buying and paying for the pork that gets added at the end of stimulus packages. Although not good, it is a relief to know that it is business as usual worldwide. In today's world, seafaring sounds like a difficult job and most likely why many of the younger men don't want to participate.

thanks for a interesting post - it's always interesting to get an insight into something new! (which seafaring is to me)
I don't get your point number 2 though: why do you mean Danish men are afraid of Danish women, and how does this affect the officers' education?

I feel as if I could make a meaningful comment but I couldn't come up with enough as I'm not as informed about the subject as I should be. that being said...happy 500th!!

kristina--it affects the education because they don't choose it due to being scared of their girlfriends. :-) that's my theory anyway. danish women can be mean and scary! (with apologies to the good one who reads this blog) :-) all that "ligestilling" is bad for choosing seafaring as a career.

Interesting post... I feel guilty now because I'm one of those people who need to be constantly in touch and who are online pretty much 24/7. I could never work on a ship.

Julie: ok, now I understand what you mean, even though I have to disagree with you with regards to Danish women - I don't find them mean and scary :-)

Thanks for telling us about what's going on in Denmark. Your fascinating little country doesn't get enough coverage! I'd love you to follow up on this scandal.

Danish women are scary? That needs to be another post, I think?

It just seems to me that at least this politician was trying to do something important to get people interested in working in a profitable industry that would give them opportunities they might not have otherwise. When our politicians are lobbied, I can't imagine that such positive outcomes are the result.

I guess I'm jealous, too. Because you know I want to work on a ship. I think I do.

Happy 500th post!
