Love your pics. You and my husband would get along fine. He is always 'dragging' us to any harbour/shipyard he can find while we are on vacation or otherwise. He too photographs of boats, ropes, etc. It is so funny to see you doing just the same. But the photographs are always exciting to look at. Why is that? Good question, no answer right now.

Once I was working on a ship that was testing to see if manganese nodules could be dredged up for deep water, very deep water in the mid-Pacific. We were using the largest "spool" of cable that could be found on the West Coast. It was like the drum in your photo and it had over 25,000 feet of braided 3/4" steel cable.
Back again. One of the great things about ships and ship yards - people do things - noticeable things, it's a world of constant effort. As Neil Young once said, rust never sleeps.

omg, how do you deal with getting up so early. lovely photos though! hope watching coupling with the family eased your headache away?
have i ever mentioned that in pervious jobs i had to handle the import of books and book related merchandise into the EU? forwarding bills of lading, packing lists, dealing with freight forwarders and customs authorities. years ago i even took a course on custom handling for import/export. such an unlikely thing for me to do it seemed, but interesting nevertheless. it's always good to keep an open mind, i guess!
oops, should have said that this was all shipping (with the occasional airfreight thrown in), so that's why i came to think of it. shipping is fascinating.
Buttons make me "trigger happy"...it looks like it is saying "press me please!". Why is it that all that steel and rope is so photogenic!? Kind of like an abstract painting!
i got to press the red button once...when i was in the hospital watching my nephew emerge without doctors in the room. the nurse there dared my sister-in-law to push. ha ha.

p.s. thanks so much for spreading the word about the "gift of jewels" project. i hope you get someone cool. remember, you can't tell them. LOL
I kept scrolling up and down through these photos . . . the repetition of blues and reds and silvers and certain shapes add up to a very pleasing whole. I just got back from Norfolk and seem to have nothing but pictures of small boats. Hmmm . . .

i woke up this morning at 3:30 a.m. tho' i actually had 'til 4:30. and naturally, i couldn't get back to sleep. so i got up and got ready for my 7:05 flight. because i was spending my day at a ship repair yard. and since i've now got a splitting headache, there's a mouse in the house (thank you, lila) and my family is yelling at me to watch coupling with them on BBC entertainment, i'll leave you with some scenes from my day.
