I love this idea! And I'm not a knitter at all, but I'd do this.
I'm also not a plant rememberer (love the phrase) which is slightly weird as my Dad and youngest brother are botanists with encyclopedic inventories of latin names and species etc etc... I remind myself I have other skills...

We have the same sort of plants, here they're called bearberry or kinnikinnick.
