I think that saying came out of the school of portraits and anti-solar flares. I too have embraced the unperfect and slightly flawed.

Off now to read.

oh yes, against the sun!

I've been battling with another one of the things you're supposed to do lately - you know how photographers are supposed to say natural light is the best? I say bah humbug. For taking product photos it's really, really difficult. I'm starting to think I'm cursed when it comes to taking photos of the books I create. I don't have good studio lights atm so I have to use natural light and it changes every freaking second, making the photos blue, yellow, magenta, green...... Gah! The white balance never seemed to be this much of an issue with analogue photography btw.

explanation of the cursed part:

My taking product photos seems to actually control the weather. It either becomes super dark or a very sharp sun suddenly appears on an otherwise grey sky.

I've also been doing this recently and generally loving the results. I embrace the occassional solar flare!

I have a really funny sister too:) We have a silent bond where EVERYTHING is funny when we are together. And I just think she is so clever! I want to put her in my pocket and have her always.

And water pictures are just breathtaking arent they?!

Since you have an iPhone with GPS the Photo Police will locate you and then pay you a visit for shooting into the sun. Have your excuses ready.

You'll need that motorcycle for a fast getaway.

I used to have great moments experimenting with my reflex using filters, coloured and greasy glass to take photos facing the sun, and it didnt stop there, then I would develop slide film with the same process of negative, you know digital is much more freedom and economy, but photography lost some of its charm with it, and the worse is how lazy I have become to use film. I had promised myself that I would find a way to make use of one of my Kodak Brownies to experiment trying to adapt them to use 35mm film. Is digital really a natural progression, or photography made simple?

I was such a sucker for J. Peterman descriptions. I bought several pieces of clothing -- including the most beautiful sleeveless, white linen dress -- on the strength of the vision it conjured up for me.

Your picture really does catch the sparkle of the sun's rays . . . a persuasive vision for breaking the rules!

The photos are gorgeous - especially the first one - and yes, rule-breaking is encouraged in photography! And isn't it great having a sister w/ a sense of humor??!!

I almost always shoot against the sun - much more fun :-)
And your first photo certainly proves any "no shooting against the sun" person wrong!
