I looked at these books online and they looked super fascinating, but they appear to be targeted more at the artist than a graphics programmer. I understand that I need to understand artists, but in your opinion, what knowledge do these offer a graphics programmer?

I'm a photographer so these are some from my collection, I think picking up photography, drawing, painting etc helps somewhat :)

That said, to be less cryptic, the post was meant to have people think about the importance of controlling light (i.e. going past the usual three analytic light types) especially when dealing with physically based rendering. In real world light is staged in quite complex ways
