Great post, Bean-O! ;-)

I want to add my thanks to Don Martin who represents me as an artist but who also inspires me to stay grounded in Bakersfield at a time when I could consider a move. Good people make all the difference. I echo your comments about the Bakersfield Museum of Art--their offerings have been incredible! The current show is a must-see!

I was raised in Bakersfield from about 1935 to 1945...and then about 1962 to 1968. I know live in Salt Lake City. Whenever I tell new friends that I raised in Bakersfield, some are quite sympathetic thinking that I was raised in Baker, California...and make remarks about the heat, desert, "godforsakenplace", etc. Not that Baker isn't a nice place...I'm sure the natives like it there...but the confusion and comparison and sometimes humorous. So, if we can think of a moniker for Bakersfield that identifies it more closely with it actual location...so much the better!

And don't forget the Bakersfield Californian who promoted the arts more than any other media in Kern County!
