So happy to see that Milo is doing well and improving with each passing day . So funny about Layla's reaction to his new accessory. :) Sounds like you have a fabulous summer planned, with lots to do. I cherish having time alone as it doesn't happen often. Plus, you have your furry friends to keep you company, and lots of gardening to do. Sounds like my kinda grocery story! Have a wonderful day. Tammy
I am so happy that Milo is doing so well and that they got all the cancer. The two weeks will be up before you know it. The steak looks wonderful and I could eat that right now at 1:28 am. I can't sleep as I fell asleep in front of the TV and slept for 2 hours. Soon your garden will be amazing with all your pretty flowers. We received some rain early Friday morning which was much welcomed. I purchase 15 bags of mulch and the gardener put it down on Friday and it looks so good. He really put a lot on hoping to keep the soil moist and not have to water as much. That is a good idea about putting the herb in a pot in the ground. I love to cook with fresh herbs. Sounds like you have a wonderful summer coming up. I'm so sorry that you won't be at the Lake House this summer. Wishing you a most wonderful Mothers Day, dear friend. Your flowers are very pretty. Hugs to Milo. Mary
Jane, I haven't been around lately but you sure have been and are going to be busy between the healing pooch (thank goodness!) and all the family weddings and getaways! So nice to sit and visit my friends...:)JP
Blondie, That is good news on Milo. You'll find plenty to do while your husband is gone. My Teddy come home tomorrow from a week long fishing trip with his brother's, BIL, Nephew and son. Blessings to you for a beautiful Mother's Day. xoxo,Susie
Oh my, sweet little Milo, thank goodness he's getting better! Jane, loving those roses! Okay, I love going to grocery stores too, WHole Foods and Trader Jo's are my favorite ones!! Have a great weekend and a Happy Mother' Day! Nancy
Happy to hear Milo is doing better. Your blog posts are always so full of interesting activities! And that steak looks amazing. :) Have a Happy Mother's Day. xo, Lin

Before I forget let me say this, make plans for the time while your hubby is away hiking. My husband goes off camping and fishing once or twice a year. It's wonderful him. I love it for one day and then I'm lonely.
So glad Milo is on the mend. Bless his little heart and yours too. :)
That steak looks wonderful. You told how to make the salad but can you tell how you do the steak?
Oh Jane I've been wondering how Milo was doing and I'm so happy to hear the good news. What a relief. I feel our dogs really are like our children especially with our 'real' kids being older now. I'm wishing you a wonderful Mother's Day with your family. I know you'll be surrounded with lots of love and laughter, and you deserve it all. hugs to you from Huntington Beach, Leslie
As always, so many beautiful things in your post Jane... but the very best of all is sweet Milo... sorry he has to wear the cone, but I love seeing him up and around, and so very thankful that the surrounding tissue was all clear... love and kisses to him!... and a Happy Mothers Day to you, xoxo... Hope Milo is all well soon, and happy the margins came back clean. When our Bo wore one of those he hated it, he kept looking at us like what the heck is this thing around my neck! I planned on being out in the garden today and it's raining and 53, yesterday hot. Sometimes this weather gets to me! Gosh you have a lot planned for the summer...
That is a nasty wound on Milo's leg, I hope it heals quickly and well! Still, I can't help but laugh when I see dogs in cones, they look like such little aliens, poor baby! Milo does have my sympathy even as I find his little conehead amusing. I am adding to the garden too, planning a little tweak here and there and a couple new beds. It sounds like you have a lot to look forward to this summer in spite of missing the lake house :>) Have a great weekend Jane!
Jane, So much in your post to touch on but all I can think of writing is I am so glad Milo is home and the margins came out clean, Poor adorable boy in his cone. Jane out here in Blog Land there are many fans of Milo, please give him a kiss for me.
Sorry there were/are complications/red tape with the Lakehouse but you know a year speeds by quickly. Sounds like you have lots of fun things planned (Blogger weekend) and family plans, summer will fly by. If I lived closer I'd come stay with you, just think of the fun we could have! Happy Mothers Day Jane, I too loss my Mom. Mine in June of 2010. Sending love, xoxoox, Vera❤️

I love grocery shopping as well, at least I did when my eyes wee still working ,, now its a little challenging but I still enjoy it,, you flowers are amazing! Bless poor Milo! I do hope he recovers very soon, it must be so uncomfortable for him. Give him a big cuddle from me. Just think, before you know it you will be sitting at the Lake House again and savouring the beauty even more than you did before. Take care xx
Lots of goodness in this post Jane, from Milo on the road to recovery, to all the things you have planned for the summer (you WILL have a good one, in spite of no lake house), to that delicious steak recipe.
Everyone is different, but I get the feeling you're a fairly social person, so when your hubby goes away make sure you have some things planned. They don't all need to involve other people, but having a couple of projects to work on will be good.
I always feel so bad for dogs when they have to wear the cone but I'm glad Milo is doing well. So funny about Layla's reaction too. You are such a good cook, Jane - your salad with the steak looks so delicious. I think we should have a big sleepover at your house over Memorial Day weekend! Wouldn't that be fun! And you could make us all some flat iron steak! Happy Mother's Day!
Hi Jane, Happy Mother's Day. Glad to read Milo is doing so much better. He is probably so happy to be home with all of you. Glad all the cancer is gone what a wonderful relief. Have a great day. Enjoy. Kris
Hello Jane I am so glad to hear that Milo is now on the mend and you have him home to take care of.....how funny to read about Layla's reaction to the cone he has to wear! Your post was so enjoyable to catch up with...lovely flowers and food photos too. I hope Milo is soon better, and wish you a very Happy Mother's Day. Helen xox176
Poor dear Conehead! I had to laugh at what Layla must have thought when she saw it while skidding to a stop! I'm glad the docs think he's going to be fine!
A 5 day wknd. alone? Honey, I'd take it in a heartbeat--and creaks be darned! No cooking...much reading..the remote to myself....quiet sleep...quiet house! mmmm! Run a fan in your bedroom at night! No creaks shall be heard!
Is flat iron steak like flank steak? Ed wants a bone-in rib eye or Porterhouse--medium rare. (No "fancy stuff" on it! His words, by the way!) Your dish is yummy sounding and looking---as usual. I think I'd love shopping at your grocery with you! A bar?? Okay! :)
The Husband did good with the roses, didn't he! Youall are going to have a very busy fun summer! Getting away is good! ( I guess. How would I know? ;) )

Poor little guy!! I hope he gets the cone off soon. Your roses are beautiful. Happy mother's day!!
Poor little Milo :( I'm glad the vet got all the tumor and that he is back to himself soon. Those steaks look so good it makes me want to get some NOW and grill. Thanks Jane for this temptation :) I love the pretty flowers and love that your husband brought you roses. I hope your day is going wonderful my dear. hugs from me...
Poor wee Milo - I do hope he's feeling a whole lot better by now! I like reading about your trips to meet your blogging friend. I look forward to reading about your visit to Door County - it has always intrigued me since I read a book set there.
So glad Milo is on the mend! That's funny how his sister didn't know what to think at first. :) Gosh, that steak looks GOOD!!! I love carnations too and you can't beat how long they last. I'm so sorry you can't use the lake house this summer. That's such a bummer, but at least you know it'll be waiting for you next year. :)
Just went through a similar process with Truman. He had bladder stones, a long incision on his belly and the cone for two solid weeks. He hated it but was a trooper about it. I love the flowers. I am so jealous that you and Cindy have been meeting up with each other. She probably doesn't remember me, but I am a big admirer of her blog. I used to be Lakewood Manor, but when we moved, it didn't make much sense to keep the name. Summer is going to be fun and jam packed for us but we love that! Hope you find a way to spend all that lovely lonely time!
Bless his little heart! I know that Milo will be happy to get rid of that cone! YEAH for getting rid of the cancer! You are the best Mom to Milo:) It is sad that you will miss the Lake this Summer but it will be all fresh and new next year! Enjoy your day dear friend, HUGS!
WOW! 31 is so young! Breast cancer scares me to death. I've lost my aunt & grandmother to it & my aunt was in her early 40's. I've had a few scares but thankfully all is ok. I religiously get my checkups. I'm so happy that Milo is home. I know how relieved you must be. I feel so bad for him in that cone but happy to hear they got all of the cancer. Have a great day!
I'm so excited that Milo is doing well! You're experiencing what I do daily as I walk my boy. He has a pattern he likes to follow and check all the pee mail that's happened since the last visit. He's gotten stubborn as he's aged and sometimes we "disagree" on where we're going to go. :)
Love all your flowers! I think it's so wonderful to have them in your home. I love the ambiance and the fragrance!
Glad to hear Milo is on the mend. You are such a good nurse to him.
Sounds like you will keep busy without your lake house. I hope you still have a fun Summer.

[Image]Well, here's my puppy, on the mend. Need I tell you he does not like this cone. He has to wear it for two weeks, no exceptions, no cheating and taking it off for even 2 minutes. It makes sense though because he has to adjust to it. The hard part is he doesn't have the freedom to snoop around the backyard, I have to walk him on a leash. The leg has so many sutures, Dr. B. said that if a stitch breaks, the whole six inches will gape open. You can see it on his thigh, I didn't want to get any more graphic than this--it's not pretty but it's looking better everyday.
[Image]This was in the afternoon after I picked him up. I lifted him on our bed and Layla and I curled up with him and we all slept blissfully for about two hours, a nice breeze blowing in the window. I had lost so much sleep over this and it was so good to have him home. And Layla was an absolute riot. When I walked in with him that morning she came tearing out of my bedroom, took one look at her big brother with the huge cone on his head and skidded to a stop. Then she quickly scurried under the couch! It took a few days of her being overly cautious around him but she's okay now.
The good news is that Dr. B. called today with the biopsy results of the tumor and the margins around what he removed show no remaining cancer cells. So it looks like he got it all. Sigh. Our prayers were answered and all of you helped. Thank you for that love and support. Our furry friends are undeniably one of the greatest gifts in life. :)
[Image]I did some patching up of the grass in the yard...this really is all I've been able to do outdoors in spite of buying plants as I mentioned in my last post. I was told to confine Milo in a crate (which I don't have), or in the bathroom if I had to go out. He could hurt himself. I was housebound until a dental appointment on Thursday and then Emily came over to dogsit. Anyway, this is my herb garden. The oregano and chives come back every year and I replace basil and parsley. This year I'm adding thyme and dill. I've been told that dill spreads like crazy and that the best thing to do is plant it in a pot and bury the pot in your garden bed. So that's what I'll do, if I ever get the chance. Maybe with The Husband home this weekend to keep The Mi company.
[Image]Major red tape at the lakehouse. But who would expect anything else? I can't go into detail and I think it would bore you anyway, but I breathed a heavy sad sigh when I saw this picture from last June. The bay in the background, the chimnea ready for some wood and a match on a cool evening, dressing up the table so pretty. Whenever I'm in HomeGoods or the like and I see the cute beachy and nautical pieces, I think, that would be so great at the lake. And then I remember, there's no lake this summer. I know I shouldn't feel sorry for myself, I'm trying to make make it a good summer here. I'm working on resurrecting my vegetable garden, painting the baker's rack I have on the patio and adding some new perennials once they go on sale at the end of July. I want to have a few family barbeques and maybe I can get The Husband to spend a few weekend afternoons or evenings going downtown, doing some shopping, meandering and having lunch or dinner al fresco. I simply love that!
We do have a lot planned...The Husband is going on a 5 day camping/hiking trip over Memorial Day weekend with sons Jeff and Kevin and about 8 other guys. He is SO excited. I will be a Hiking Widow, I simply don't know what I'll do with this time alone. No one to cook for or clean up after. Trying to sleep alone and hearing every moan and creak in this old house. Anyone want to come and keep me company?
The last weekend of May we will be getting together with my blogger friend Cindy from Applestone Cottage, as well as her husband, in Door County, Wisconsin. I'll give you more of an idea of what that's about in my next post. It will be our sixth year getting together. Now this is a true blogger friendship!
We have a trip to Asheville planned for July and then son Jeff's wedding in mid August. Also, my niece, Jaime, is getting married in Louisville in early August so it will be wonderful to go down and see my brother, his wife and family and just enjoy beautiful Kentucky.
That's all we're doing. ;-)
[Image]This post has become lengthy as usual so I'll tell you about what I threw together Wednesday night. We have been loving flat iron steak. Yes, we are meat eaters. Still, you can do this and omit the beef. Flat iron steak is best cooked rare to medium and it doesn't take long at all. I used a grill pan. While that was happening, I tossed together a salad with a mix of greens and a little romaine for crunch. Then I threw in some scallions and blue cheese and seasoned it all with a pinch of garlic salt and oregano. I then topped it with sliced plum tomatoes. Once this was done--and I think it takes a whole five minutes, I made some cous cous. This is comparable to making instant rice. I love this stuff because just a few spoonfuls makes a nice side dish. I like to mix it into salads but I wanted a little side here. Finally, I poured about a cup of balsamic vinegar into a saucepan, added about 2 tablespoons of olive oil and a pinch of garlic powder and let it reduce and thicken up, the vinegar cooking off. Do this last minute or it will harden beyond belief. So now that I have you feeling like you are juggling a million balls in the air, simply drizzle a bit of the balsamic on the greens and top with thin slices of the steak. I saved a little of the sauce to add to the top of the steak, too. I've made this a few times and we feel like we are eating upscale restaurant fare.
[Image]I love grocery shopping, I go every other Friday. I totally understand it's not every one's favorite thing to do but when you love to cook, it's like being a gardener in a nursery or a crafter in Michael's. I lose track of time, just sort of become mesmerized while dreaming up meals I want to make. Well, yesterday I saw these flowers...it never registered that the floral department was overflowing in anticipation of Mother's Day. This is such an over the top store (a smoothie bar, meat and fish grilled to order, a piano player and a bar that serves, yes, alcohol). I simply love carnations. They are so colorful and if you keep the stems trimmed and the water refreshed, they can last up to two weeks.
[Image]Then The Husband came home from work with a bouquet of roses. "I wanted to get you something before everything nice was sold out." What a sweetie. I feel like I'm in a floral shop along with all the vases I have, including tulips. These roses are so pretty, a cross between deep pink and red.
Every Mother's Day we go on a three mile Breast Cancer Awareness walk. Our group honors The Husband's first wife who died from breast cancer when she was just 31 years old. Her sister puts this together and after the walk, hosts a brunch at her home. I have to admit, sometimes I don't make the walk, asthma is a battle for me in the spring, the donation comes from the purchase of the T-shirt we all wear, the rest comes from the camaraderie and the love we hold in our hearts for this brave woman that won't be forgotten.
Off I go. Again, thank you for your prayers and well wishes for my Milo. Have a wonderful weekend. Celebrate yourself, your mother, your mentor...or simply celebrate life!
Jane x

It was good to see Milo out and about in the yard (even if he does have to wear a cone). I am glad he is doing so well.
