What a delightful post. I am so sorry that your cast is giving you problems. I know that you want it off, but don't take it off to soon, you will always have problems is it doesn't heal properly. The steak and salsa sound wonderful. I am making a copy of it. Your garden looks very pretty with all your lovely flowers. Here you are with to much rain and us with no rain at all. Crazy weather. This relentless heat and humidity is almost as tiring as endless winters! With all the rain we have had, everything is still really a nice green instead of dried up and brown. I think your little purple flowers are phlox. I hope you get the sleeve worked out for your son's wedding, no matter you will be beautiful. Shopping with the daughters sounds like lots of fun. Hi Jane, Your woodland garden is lovely! Pretty daylilies. I like your petunias and I believe the other one is phlox. Very pretty. Your food looks great, and glad you had good times with the girls. Praying your arm will heal and you will be able to have the pretty dresses you want to wear for the two weddings. I commented before but I don't see it. Anyway...I understand why the dr, might not want to take the cast off, but can it be taken off just for the day? If so, I would insist if I were you. It's not like you can go and find another dress, and after all, it's YOUR arm and you're the boss, not him, right?

Reading about your daughters reminds me a lot of my sister and myself when we were younger :) Now, we are extremely close,even though we live on different continents. To answer your question about the cherries - I used a cherry pitter, but a thick straw or the end of a small funnel can as well successfully remove cherry pits.
It sounds like you had a lovely week and even managed to get in a little rest time. Sometimes we really need it, especially when our body is trying the heal. Jane, google removable arm casts…there are a lot of options now days. Perhaps you could show an example to to cranky doctor and explain that you have the upcoming wedding and need to be able to get into your dress. If not, I think the seamstress could open up the inside seam of the sleeve and temporarily hem the opening. She could perhaps add some pretty matching ribbon at the wrist to tie it closed at the wrist.
You have the best recipes! Hope your arm is healing, and that you get the cast off really soon. I have only had one cast, ever. I had a car accident and the air bag broke a bone in my palm. I was still working at the time. You should have seen me trying to type. The cast had a rod that was attached to my left ring finger. It was GREAT fun!!! I see, that this hasn't slowed you down at all. You're like the energizer bunny!! Take care!!
It is hot here, too....I suppose it is everywhere and we are also fighting some brown spots on our grass from too much rain...so frustrating!

Your garden is so sweet and beckons one to stay awhile, I wish I could tell you what that bloom was-but I think our regions have such different gardening goodies. It is comforting to know that it is not just my daughters who are at opposite ends of the spectrum, all three of mine are and your day adventure at the mall sounded very similar to our outings when we are all together. Love the hinged caps on those bottles! I save all our Starbucks glass bottles too and use them constantly for flowers (after I remove the labels) That appetizer sounds amazingly refreshing. Sometimes I'm tempted to just make appetizers for lunch or dinner. I was admiring your pretty flowers by the brick. We can't have anything grow up or on our brick because the brick heats up so much during the day, it'll scorch it. Can't. Wait. For. Cooler. Weather. :)

Your recipe sounds delicious! When our daughter comes to town she does so many things on the grill. We have got to be more adventurous on it. And I too love seeing the young ones posting pics of their meals on FB. I tell them I'll make a blogger of them yet! Jane dear, I'm just catching up-I've been away for 3 out of 4 weeks! You are a doll-cast or not you will look gorgeous for the weddings. Not much grilling outside here in this torrid weather - and with the sporadic storms passing through the humidity and moisture have give the mosquitoes a huge presence - so I stay indoors and the garden seems to be falling apart around me! Hello! So glad to be back. It's been a pretty uneventful week just hanging out at home mostly. Trying to sneak outside for some fresh air when it's not raining, which is most of the time. Some of my plants seem a little bit stunted and my lawn has some brown spots. I think it's just a lack of sun since I truly baby my grass after losing the whole lawn to grubs a few years ago. Not being an expert I can only guess that lack of sun causes problems the same way lack of water does. Thankfully, some of my tried and true flowers are holding on, like these petunias. Very simple and I thought they looked interesting against the brick of my home.

These bloomed a week or so ago. I neglected to add them to my garden journal and so I'm taking a guess that they are Stock. No?

Abigail made a huge container of Sangria for our 4th of July party and it was out of sight. She suggested that I save the cute bottles with their hinged caps for flowers. Aren't they cool? I love that she is starting to think that way. She has started to cook a lot more for her house-mates since she has been on summer break from teaching. She texts me pictures of her dinners and I'm always a bit amazed that she is coming up with some really delicious meals since I've really only seen her do eggs and sandwiches when she lived here. And it's sort of funny, she and Emily now take pictures of food, much the way we do for our blogs. At one time they cackled and giggled when I did that. Hmmm...
I actually had a great day with both of them on Monday. I have probably mentioned before that the two get along like oil and water. Very much opposites. I hoped as they got older they would become closer but that hasn't happened yet and I think it's just a matter of pride and finding it easier to just carry on as usual instead of working it all out. Habit maybe. So we hit a mall together and we honestly had fun. No arguing or drama. I tried to give them both the same amount of attention (and I think this is what the whole problem stems from). I flitted back and forth between them in the stores and as we walked through the mall. It's difficult but I think we are doing better each time it's just the three of us.
I am going for the fitting of my dress for Jeff's wedding next week. I'm not sure how that is going to work-the sleeves are quite slim and very sheer...I don't know if the one will fit over my cast on the left arm. I thought about asking my doctor to take it off just for that one day but I know him. He's sort of a cranky older man and very set in his ways. Thankfully he's just a specialist, I could never have him as a G.P. So I'm really worried. I also have my niece's wedding in Louisville in two weeks. We leave the day I get the cast off given my fracture has healed. Say a prayer for me. I've been fretting over a dress for that wedding as well as a pre-party the night before. You must know me by now--I overthink everything and just maybe have self confidence issues. I have searched shop after shop in the malls and online for the perfect dresses. I think I may have found what I like. What a headache. And men. Wouldn't it be wonderful to just select a suit and tie from the closet and a pair of dress pants and starched shirt and call it a day? Ugh. Can't live with them and can't live with them.

Today was miserable with the heat. Abby came home as she has an event here tomorrow. She was complaining she wanted something cool and refreshing to nosh on. I was ready to do my weekly shopping so once I was at the grocery store I remembered I had a nice English cucumber (seedless). I picked up a package of mini pumpernickel bread slices and some cream cheese. Do you make these? They were so popular years ago as appetizers. Just a nice spread of cream cheese on the bread, a cucumber slice and and a tiny sprinkle of dill. They truly hit the spot between lunch and dinner.

I mentioned we cooked peaches on the grill last week after making our dinner outside. I neglected to get a picture. The other night we did mango and pineapple and both were absolutely delicious. The mango was a bit tough---maybe it needed more time, but the pineapple was spectacular. Look at the charring. It made it even better. I highly recommend you try this. Cut some fruit up in the morning and have it ready. You'll love it.

I have a recipe for you that sounds a bit involved but it really isn't. If I can do it with one arm, so can you, And you won't be sorry! And I've included some ideas for enjoying some of this recipe during the long cold months of winter should you so desire. Here ya go:
GRILLED STEAK TACOS WITH FIRE ROASTED SALSA & VEGGIESFor the marinade:***
1 habanero pepper, minced
1 large garlic clove, minced
1 T. chili powder
1 t. each salt & pepper
1 T. olive oil
Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Add 1 1/2 pound skirt steak and roll in the mixture, patting it in as well. Let marinate a minimum of 1 hour.
For the salsa:***
2 whole large garlic cloves
I poblano pepper seeded and cut in quarters
1 large beefsteak tomato cut in half
1 large white onion cut in quarters
2 T. lime juice
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
Pinch of S & P
Fire up the grill. Skewer the first 4 ingredients divided equally on to 2 skewers. Grill on high heat, turning often until charred, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile. mix together the lime juice and cilantro in a medium size bowl. When veggies are cooled, chop coarsely and add to the lime mixture tossing well. Add salt and pepper and set aside.
Remove the steak from the marinade and grill on high heat 5-7 minutes per side. Meanwhile. wrap 8 corn tortillas in parchment paper and then foil and place on the grill with the steak away from direct heat.
To Assemble:***
Let steak rest 15 minutes. During this time I grilled a few extra vegetables for a full-on meal; slices of red and green pepper, zucchini and red onion. This is an optional side dish but so good.
Slice steak very thinly against the grain. It should be rare to medium rare to maintain it's tenderness. Serve the steak over the corn tortillas topped with the salsa. Add a nice topping of additional cilantro, queso fresco (a Mexican crumbling cheese you can find in almost any grocery store), and a squeeze of lime juice.
Enjoy!!!
Now, the best part is, and I mentioned that just before the recipe, you can relive your warm summer nights enjoying part of this meal by simply making the salsa as directed and then canning or freezing it. You will have that nice charbroiled flavor to serve with any sort of Mexican meal or as snack with chips. Make nachos topped with this incredibly delicious salsa and bring it to a party as an appetizer. Have a few jars on hand to give as holiday gifts along with the recipe. The ideas are endless.

It was 95 degrees in the shade today which happens only occasionally here in Northern Illinois. Same for tomorrow. A slight breeze picked up about 8:00 p.m. tonight and I herded the two hounds outside for some fresh (?) air. I saw the sun setting behind the houses west of us and was able to get a snap. No altering or filters of this photo. I think you can really see the steam coming out of the ground as it hit a bit cooler air. My daylily's that surround my walnut tree are really coming into bloom as well as the Queen Anne Lace. I have ferns tucked in there as well as columbine. I've always called this my Woodland Garden because of the shade.
Thanks to all of you again for your kind well wishes on the broken arm. The pain is much the same but I can deal with that. It's this stupid cast that drives me nuts. I'm trying to visit blogs a bit everyday-if I haven't come to you recently, I will. I was up until midnight last night finishing my newspaper column for the Michigan paper. Leave it to me to wait for a deadline. The other day I came home about 2:00 in the afternoon after going to have my hair and highlights done. I walked past a sink full of dishes, 2 baskets of laundry that needed to be folded, and a bathroom in serious need of cleaning, and climbed into my bed with Layla and Milo. Two hours later I awoke to the late afternoon sun peeking through the blinds. All three of us stretched and I could swear those dogs smiled. Yes! Blondie can do chill once in awhile! :)

This relentless heat and humidity is almost as tiring as endless winters! With all the rain we have had, everything is still really a nice green instead of dried up and brown.
I think your little purple flowers are phlox.
I hope you get the sleeve worked out for your son's wedding, no matter you will be beautiful.
Shopping with the daughters sounds like lots of fun.

Hi Jane, oh that cast is giving you great difficulties isn't it? And the heat, you poor things, we can totally sympathize with you...it's been beyond hot for so long here too.
Awkward question, but are you the Jane that left the comment on my blog yesterday? The Jane that did, wrote about commenting, and how she strives to return visits and comments. But unfortunately there is no link to her blog in the comment so there is no way of being sure who she was, or visiting her blog back.

So much yummy goodness! Your flowers look so pretty. I run around all day watering ours in this dreadful heat. Yes, I believe the purple flowers are stock as I have white ones. Sorry to hear your cast is giving you trouble, no fun.

Hi Jane, Your woodland garden is lovely! Pretty daylilies. I like your petunias and I believe the other one is phlox. Very pretty. Your food looks great, and glad you had good times with the girls. Praying your arm will heal and you will be able to have the pretty dresses you want to wear for the two weddings. Maybe they can split the seam on the sleeve, it'd be just a temporary thing and could be sewn back up when the cast is off. Best wishes!

I commented before but I don't see it. Anyway...I understand why the dr, might not want to take the cast off, but can it be taken off just for the day? If so, I would insist if I were you. It's not like you can go and find another dress, and after all, it's YOUR arm and you're the boss, not him, right?
The recipe sounds delish, but then everything you cook sounds yummy.
I didn't know it's been so hot there. We are still having rain and every time we hear a forecast it turns out to be wrong. Mother Nature is very unpredictable this summer.

What a delightful post! I genuinely enjoyed it! Love your garden and this shot of your day lilies on a golden light is simple and incredibly beautiful. Reading about your daughters reminds me a lot of my sister and myself when we were younger :) Now, we are extremely close,even though we live on different continents. To answer your question about the cherries - I used a cherry pitter, but a thick straw or the end of a small funnel can as well successfully remove cherry pits.

It sounds like you had a lovely week and even managed to get in a little rest time. Sometimes we really need it, especially when our body is trying the heal. Jane, google removable arm casts…there are a lot of options now days. Perhaps you could show an example to to cranky doctor and explain that you have the upcoming wedding and need to be able to get into your dress. If not, I think the seamstress could open up the inside seam of the sleeve and temporarily hem the opening. She could perhaps add some pretty matching ribbon at the wrist to tie it closed at the wrist.

You have the best recipes! Hope your arm is healing, and that you get the cast off really soon. I have only had one cast, ever. I had a car accident and the air bag broke a bone in my palm. I was still working at the time. You should have seen me trying to type. The cast had a rod that was attached to my left ring finger. It was GREAT fun!!! I see, that this hasn't slowed you down at all. You're like the energizer bunny!! Take care!!

It is hot here, too....I suppose it is everywhere and we are also fighting some brown spots on our grass from too much rain...so frustrating!
I will say a prayer for the right dress for you and for you to have rest and peace about it. It will work out. Your hand/arm healing properly is the most important thing. But, I totally get it about overthinking something....anything. Ha.

I didn't know about your arm...hoping for fast healing...bet you can figure some way to get your dress sleeve over the cast. Maybe rip the seam on the sleeve...? You could sew it back when the cast comes off.

Your garden is so sweet and beckons one to stay awhile, I wish I could tell you what that bloom was-but I think our regions have such different gardening goodies.
It is comforting to know that it is not just my daughters who are at opposite ends of the spectrum, all three of mine are and your day adventure at the mall sounded very similar to our outings when we are all together. Now it is even more complicated because we have grand babies that need equal time too! Keeps us on our toes, I suppose.
I am keeping these recipes, being the jalapeno, poblano, habanero, and most any pepper fan, except for the ghost pepper, these are right up our alley.
I understand your anxiety over the dress situation, it would be this way even without the cast and now it is even more concerning-can the sleeves be altered?

Love the hinged caps on those bottles! I save all our Starbucks glass bottles too and use them constantly for flowers (after I remove the labels) That appetizer sounds amazingly refreshing. Sometimes I'm tempted to just make appetizers for lunch or dinner. I was admiring your pretty flowers by the brick. We can't have anything grow up or on our brick because the brick heats up so much during the day, it'll scorch it. Can't. Wait. For. Cooler. Weather. :)

Your flowers look so pretty! By the way, that's not stock in the second photo, it's phlox. It's one of my favorites because my precious grand mother had them growing all over the farm. My heart goes out to you with the dress / cast problem, hopefully that cast will be off!

I laughed to myself as you talked about going for the fitting for your dress - I am so glad that all the wedding hoopla is finally over. It was wonderful, but I was exhausted when we got home yesterday.

my gosh you have a busy life!!! I feel so bad you are worrying about the cast and dresses fitting, that is a bother, maybe it will fit better than you think,, maybe just a little bit of stitches let out will ease it on,
My two girls get along like your two girls, but they love each other,, just different,,you reminded me of the cucumber and cream cheese sandwich bites I once made, I need to make them again,

NICE recipes. We've been avoiding the grill lately with a heat index hovering around 107 lately. BUT that too shall pass, and we'll be back out on the patio grilling in no time!
I love the adorable little bottles with the hinged caps and the carnations in them. They are perfect for flowers! :)
The cucumber sandwiches are perfect for a hot summer's day! I'll be making them later this weekend.

Hello Jane! Thank you so much for your note at the old blog and visiting my new one. It is wonderful to reconnect and I've added you to my blogroll so I won't lose you again. I can see that there is a lot going on in your life that I want to catch up on.
Your recipe sounds delicious! When our daughter comes to town she does so many things on the grill. We have got to be more adventurous on it. And I too love seeing the young ones posting pics of their meals on FB. I tell them I'll make a blogger of them yet! And take heart, my 3 sisters and I all seemed different for years and had our own friends while we were raising our kids. Now we're so close. I love them more and more and appreciate our differences.
I hope your dress plans work out for these important weddings coming up. Just remember to keep resting as much as you can so that arm will heal. I loved reading about your nap with the dogs. We have a Milo too!

Jane dear, I'm just catching up-I've been away for 3 out of 4 weeks! You are a doll-cast or not you will look gorgeous for the weddings. I'm laughing about your comments about men, they do have it so much easier don't they?? Your recipes and dishes looks so yummy. Grilled fruits are just perfect. Scott and I had 2 weeks of gourmet food and drinks in Riviera Maya so you can imagine we are back to fresh, healthy eating (detoxing;) now that we are home again.

I said the very same thing to a friend yesterday about men's clothes for weddings (and everything!).....so easy and simple without any angst at all, how lucky they are!

Oh that must be such a challenge trying to find a dress for the wedding with a cast on your arm. I hope that you will find something soon and "call it a day"! LOL! It has been so hot here too. I think a lot of people are experiencing a heat wave right now. Luckily, we've gotten some rain that has cooled down the temps just a bit. That recipe you shared looks good. I love anything on the grill!

Jane dear, I so hope you will be able to travel without discomfort to the Louisville wedding, so sorry you are having such problems with your cast and hope you heal quickly.
Not much grilling outside here in this torrid weather - and with the sporadic storms passing through the humidity and moisture have give the mosquitoes a huge presence - so I stay indoors and the garden seems to be falling apart around me!
I noticed in your comment today (and I did address your fracture in a long comment to you back a few posts - perhaps you forgot) that you say I've not been posting often - perhaps you've missed them because I do try to post daily once back from the travels! You know me, always have something to chatter about!!
