My. families' graves are in the Melpine Cemetery, which is four miles south and one mile east from the Wahkonsa Country Club between Wilton and Durant...and just a few miles north and a couple of. Iled or so west from Wildcat Den. There had previously been a Melpine Presbyterian church at the same white gravel crossroads. I think the origin of ' Melpine' has to do with the Pine River. Does it perhaps travelmon down to Or near to Wildcat Den...hence the same name? John McClean
On September 1, 2004, we drove down to Wildcat Den State park near Muscatine, so as to tour the area and hike the woods. At the park was this school, the Melpine School, built in 1877. It was moved to the park in 1969 and restored, but not open the day we were there.
The school was originally located about 4 miles north of its present location, on Martz Rd (Lane?), and closed in 1964.
