A couple of weeks ago, I got a small circular rash on my cheek. The funny thing was, all the facial hair inside the circle disappeared. Over the last two or three weeks, My wife has noticed small bald spots developing all over the back of my head. I scheduled a doctor's appointment to figure out what was going on, but by the time I got to the Doctor, I was in a full blown case of shingles and I forgot to ask him about my disappearing hair. Now, the shingles have been surpressed but the bald patchy areas remain; so, I made another trip to the doctor today and was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata.
In alopecia areata, the affected hair follicles are mistakenly attacked by a person's own immune system (white blood cells), resulting in the arrest of the hair growth stage. Alopecia areata usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis). As if Male Pattern Baldness wasn't enough, now I have small leopard like spots over the hair I do have left. So I'm back on Prednisone for two weeks until this clears up.
Prednisone = weight gain + acne + mood swings.
