Very interesting. My name, for quirky personal reasons, has a period at the end of it. Bev. Cooke is how I'm often seen online, and it's part of my professional identity. But nobody's complained about that, and I havaen't been forced to change it. Seems that if they could allow this, then they could allow Father, Fr., Sister, Mother, Deacon, as well as the First Nations and Scots names they're also challenging. I'm sorry to see you go, I valued your posts, Father, but undoubtedly we'll see each other in real life!

[Image]Dear Facebook,
"Fr. Justin" is not only my authentic identity - it is also the identity you accepted and recognized when I signed up and you made me a member of Facebook in April 2007. This makes it a pretty old and well-established online identity in terms of both the internet and of Facebook's own history as an organization.
More than that, "Fr. Justin" (or, more accurately, "Father Justin", which also eliminates the punctuation and abbreviations you don't accept) is, for the vast majority of the people I interact with on Facebook, the name I am "known by in everyday life." Not "Justin" - no one calls me that, not even my parents... No, my parishioners, my bishop, my seminary instructors, my fellow priests - everyone who knows me as an Orthodox priest refers to me as "Father Justin".
Names and identities are not simply titles that we assume - they are given to us by our parents, by our peers, by those in relationship with us. I am called "Father Justin" by those in my church and even by those outside the Christian faith who wish to honour our tradition; it is an identity that is not mine by right, but is rather bestowed upon and entrusted to me... one which is thus not mine to relinquish, and which I cannot in good conscience give up.
I recognize that making what may appear to be an exception to your rule against titles in order to honour a centuries-old tradition and accommodate a specific sub-culture may be a move that, like your decision to accommodate drag queen "Sister Roma", will be unpopular with some - but it is the right thing to do.
I also recognize that this is not a perfect solution. There are some who do not know me, who, coming from other Christian sub-cultures that try to ensure they call no man "Father", will insist on addressing me simply as "Justin". However, I am not "Justin": those who come from that same sub-culture who do know me and respect me, such as my parents, will call me by my proper, given, legal name, "Edward".
Ideally, in an edge-case like this, in a global, multi-cultural society such as ours, you would come up with a programming solution that would allow my friends and family to choose to address me in the way they felt was most comfortable and appropriate to the relationship that we actually have in real life. After all, isn't Facebook all about enabling us to represent our real relationships and express our authentic identities online, the "hacker way"? Isn't that ideal of freedom of to express one's true self what was behind Facebook's decision to allow us to enter anything we want in the "gender" field? Shouldn't this ideal be extended to all cultures and sub-cultures equally?
However, if you Facebook "hackers" can't come up with a way to programmatically accommodate all the complexities of my authentic identity (which is, admittedly, a classic "edge-case"), I would urge you to at least ensure that you avoid the subtle form of North American cultural imperialism that would force the majority of my Facebook friends to address me online by a name they are unfamiliar with and using a level of informality they are uncomfortable with. Please accommodate my friends' Orthodox Christian culture and acknowledge "Father Justin" as the name I am known by by them in everyday life.
Yours authentically,
Fr. Justin.

A bit of the evidence I sent them.
Hi,
Thanks for contacting us. At this time, we can't verify your name. It might be because it doesn't follow our name standards and has:
- Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation
- Characters from multiple languages
- Titles of any kind (ex: professional, religious)
- More than one person’s name, because Facebook accounts are for individual use
Facebook is a place where people use their authentic identities, and we want to make sure you can use yours.
If this is the name you are known by in everyday life, please help us verify it by attaching a copy of an ID that shows your name, photo and date of birth in a reply to this email.
"Dear Facebook: I am not "Justin"..."
