Sorry to rain on Jerry's Newsstand but the truth is it is not opened that regularly and when it is open you have to go to the side door and hope there is a paper. Many people, with exaggerated stories of Jerry's importance to the neighborhood (he watches out for our children was one ridiculous comment),in their effort to protect his income inflated the importance of his newsstand. Yes, it would be great to have a functioning newsstand outside a major subway station at the crosspath of so many people--sadly Jerry's is not that. Tell me if you can when he is open, tell me if you can the array of newspapers or magazines he sells. People on EVG and other sites rallied to protect him against competition. I continue to feel this was a mistake. No one is making money from newsstands, but our neighborhood deserves something better than what Jerry is currently offering.

News stands are anachronistic. The stand on the Bowery has been closed every time I passed by. And Gerry is Gerry. We support our past. My point, we don't need a new news stand. It's just a way for the Village Alliance to get a fee for the lease.

I'll always be sad at how they wiped out al of the interesting and unique newsstands to be glass and generic everywhere. That was huge.

Maybe they will address the garbage that is always "uglifying" this stretch of sidewalk and "urban gardens." Not sure why anyone would want to open any business along this stretch because of the garbage that piles up along here. Who is supposed to be cleaning this area? The city? Parks Department? The building owners? The schools? The tenants, both residential and commercial? The answer...evidently nobody, based upon the evidence.
