This petition is to promote diversity in our East Village food options. No more $1 slice pizzeria. No more expensive brick oven pizzerias. NO MORE PIZZERIAS! There should be limitations for new pizzeria openings that are similar to the ones in place for new bars (unfortunately, these aren't enforced enough). Maybe prevent new pizzerias from opening up too close to existing ones? I'm saddened at the loss of so many great EV restaurants and just want to raise awareness of the pizzeria over-saturation. Eh, i lived on Clinton St for 20 years (no longer there). I'm more saddened by the closure of the rice and beans places being replaced by super expensive trendoid restaurants. I never had a problem with the pizzarias, at least they're affordable.
Plus, if the pizza places close, it's not like a chinese take out or rice and beans joint will replace it, it will be replaced by a place selling pork buns for $8 a shot or something.
Face it, most of East Villagers now only care about a facade of diversity, so that they can wave their "edgey & cool" flag.
If they REALLY cared about "old school" East Village, they'd all be flocking to old school restaurants, bakeries and bars instead of to the latest opening on the black.

I have no idea what this petition is supposed to do or how we can reasonably get in the business of predetermining what subclasses of businesses are acceptable to a neighborhood. I can at least understand community opposotion to bars due to noise and other adverse issues but is there really a reasonable argument that a community should be regulating one type of food establishment over another in this manner? If the community really wants cheap alternative food, they should be able to support it like they do cheap pizza. Especially in the east village, which has about as diverse a set of food options as anywhere in the united states.

Actually, I just looked at Mimi and Coco's; I'm not impressed with what they have to offer, and again, where's the vegan stuff?
My go-to pizzeria closed suddenly recently; Viva Herbal Pizza on 2nd avenue offered kosher-dairy cheese, but importantly had several vegan options, and even gluten-free crust. They were one of the first I knew of to have Daiya cheese, so they are sorely missed, and not just by me.
At least Nonna's has a great vegan slice; fortunately Two Boots has their "V for Vegan" slice. If any of these $1 pizza joints offered a vegan slice, I certainly wouldn't protest them.

$1 pizzerias are great for young students, NYs underemployed masses, underpaid workers who run the surrounding snooty stores and restaurants, and anyone on the go who needs a quick fix. They are not threatening to anyone. When I want great pizza I take my time and sit down at a great pizza place (like Lil Frankies!). They are not a mega-chain (like 7-11 or McDonalds) and I definitely believe they add to the landscape of the city. If I remember correctly the trend started right after the crash in '08. It was the first time in my over-20 years in NYC that I've seen a common item go down in price. This is an unbelievably pathetic "cause", I wish them the wost of luck.
I'd rather have more small business owners starting up a $1 pizzeria than more boring chains like 7-11 and Dunkin' Donuts.
