What a shame, that's a beautiful old building. I doubt that the W Village would be the valuable piece of history/real estate that it is if this kind of shit happened over there.

New York City is all and only about making money and that rule of thumb applies to culture, historical buildings and institutions, art, music, literature, architecture, etc...

Friends from Europe recently commented on why NYC for all its wealth has some shit architecture, I explained because luxury is hidden inside while the rest of us get to see the mundane exterior only.

This one is a real shame. But no changes in value of historic buildings mean that highest bidder gets to dictate perm change to a lovely historic block. Ergo crapfest.
