Somehow my Vista computer got set to open batch files (.bat) in NotePad. No clue how, really (since there is no Open With right-click option for batch files). Anyhow, the fix was as follows: Fire up Regedit Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bat Clear the OpenWithList Key Remove the UserChoice Key
