I recently had a daughter in Vanderbilt University Medical Center for 92 days. We got to know the staff and had several discussions on the thinking and decision making process of doctors, surgeons, and hospital administrators. Our surgeon said they are taught to start thinking of the worst possible scenario, eliminate that - if possible, then work backward toward the least problematic situation.
