Throughout the overly-long, poorly-amplified, oddly language-segregated, yet still thrilling Giants World Series victory rally at Civic Center Plaza today, no speaker really hit the right note. Here's what someone (probably Gavin Newsom) should have said:
Since its earliest days, San Francisco has been known for its tolerance and acceptance, for being a place where even the weirdos, misfits, and outcasts can fit in. What other city would embrace a ballteam with a wild pirate-bearded closer, a pitchingstaff and catcher who are barely old enough to drink, a rolly-polly Venezuelan "Panda Bear" infielder, a foul-mouthed long-haired half-Filipino pothead starter, a Colombian MVP believed by many to be "over the hill," and a Texas country boy who wears his wife's thong to rally the troops? Only in San Francisco.
It was hard to get respect all season...and post-season: the Giants had to endure condescending dismissals and taunts that they couldn't do it. Nevertheless, the Giants didn't stop believing. This diverse team pulled together, using teamwork and tenacity to bring home the World Series trophy.
Today, let us all take inspiration from the Giants, realizing that whatever our background, whether we're a misfit or a weirdo, we can all pull together to do something great. Something Giant.
