I had always heard that Alberta was “Canada’s Texas”, but what about the other provinces? Here’s my go at it: Alberta is Canada’s Texas (big hats, oil, conservative cowboys)
Ontario is Canada’s New York (crowded/rude/cosmopolitan cities but also rural areas, everybody else hates them)
Québec is Canada’s Louisiana (French heritage, weird system of government, personne ne peut les comprendre, surtout les français)
BC is Canada’s Oregon (conifers, outdoors-y hippies, yoga, pot, disdain of yet secret affinity for California)
Saskatchewan is Canada’s North Dakota (flat, wheat, cold, desolate)
Manitoba is Canada’s Minnesota (ice fishing, lakes, penny-pinching, cold)
New Brunswick is Canada’s Idaho (potatoes, except with a bit of French)
Newfoundland/Labrador is Canada’s Alabama (funny accents, brunt of jokes)
Nova Scotia is Canada’s Maine (lobster fisherman)
PEI is Canada’s Rhode Island (name includes “island”, tiny, densely-populated)
Up North (Yukon/NW Territories/Nunavut) is Canada’s Alaska (tundra, polar bears, mountains, stolen land/resources from native peoples)
Note: of course these are all stereotypes, on both sides of the border—not every Toronto resident is rude, for example :-)
