That occurred during the lunch time which was only 15 minutes.
The president of Ferrari comes to our design office by helicopter and does business in 30 minutes and goes back. He is such a busy man. He decides everything. We have to produce many designs until he says OK. He wasn't satisfied our design at that time. But we couldn't have him go back because the schedule was tight. So our boss stopped him there using lunch as an excuse and ordered me to make new car design in 15 minutes.
This anecdote is when Kiyoyuki Okumura, world famous car designer, was working on designing Ferrari Enzo. Then Okuyama was working for Pininfarina, Italian leading car design company, as one of the rank-and-file designers.
People who are involved in creating car like Enzo, which is made once in ten years, have special feeling to the car. Furthermore, Enzo was so special that it has the founder's name. So our mind was rocked like a storm and no one couldn't control it. Due date was imminent and everyone were getting emotional. Then the storm lets up and you find a middle ground. If you miss the point, you never reach a goal. I gave my idea concrete shape and drew design which I had sitting on for months in 15 minutes. The president of Ferrari seemed to be satisfied to the presentation after the lunch and said "Good for you, you can do it". (本多)
