9月号のテキストでまたYMさんが佳作に選出なされました。
おめでとうございます。

今月は私はやっつけで英訳してしまいましたが、あらためて思ったこと
があります。

Writers' Workshopの課題文は自然な日本語なので、英語にする以前に
どういう日本語であるかを理解することがまず必要であるということです。

私なんかは直訳調にしか英訳できないのですが、YMさんの英文は
使われている表現などとても参考になります。

参考になるのも一度自分で英訳をしてその苦労を知っているからこそ。
Writers' Workshopまでは手が回らないという声も聞きますが、
骨までしゃぶるためにはぜひ押さえておきたいところです。

今回はお二人からご投稿いただきました。

How many terms that symbolize Paris are there ? The
city of Art, Paris in Flowers, and Fashion trendsetter.
Parisian or Parisienne who is bred in Paris. Brand
goods represented by MHLV group. All of these sound
fashionable and have elegant impression. But real
France has other faces than fashionable and elegant.

France's youth employment promotion called the Contract
of First Employment(CPE) has sparked youth riot for
over a month all over France and made France government
repealed the law. One of the reasons is that the rights
of employees are protected by laws and it is so difficult
for employers to fire workers that new youth are difficult
to enter labor market. The tradition that the French
protests against politics and social issues by demonstration
in the streets was seen this time. But experts see that
the French government postponed labor market reform and
there will come a day when our sins will find us out little
by little like body blow. This turmoil succeeding last year's
riot by the immigrant youth provided a glimpse into another
France that is far from chic and fashionable image that the
Japanese have. (本多)



では8月号のテキストに載っている５月号の解説です。

佐藤先生の解説で、「いかに「流れる、自然な英語」になっているか」
が今回の選考基準だったとあります。これが難しいんですよね。
自然な英文というものは一朝一夕では身につきそうにありません。

佐藤先生の参考訳を読むと、元の日本文にはない内容の英語が追加されて
いたりしますが、これも自然な英語にするために必要なことなのでしょう。
また、日本語で訳さないほうが自然であるということもたびたびあります。

どうしたら自然な英語が身につくのでしょうね。
