People tend to think that every Japanese company nowadays is rushing to China, but it's not always true. Japanese companies cannot ignore China because it is low-cost production base and big market for Japan as well.
On the other hand, ASEAN, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippine and Vietnam where Japanese companies have been expanding into for long time are drawing attention.
This is because risks such as SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, and anti-Japanese riot that are caused by Japanese companies operating only in China has been recognized recently and many Japanese companies are moving to ASEAN as an alternative production bases in Asia. But there are other reasons for ASEAN to draw attention than that. ASEAN countries' economies have been steadily improving since recovering from the Asia monetary crisis in 1997 and 1998 and domestic demand in ASEAN has been expanding.
Thailand has attracted a great deal of Japanese companies' attention within ASEAN countries. In particular, Japanese manufacturers have begun integrated manufacture or established development centers in Thailand. Mr. Sakizaki Takayuki, sales manager of Pasona Thailand, says that they tend to make Thailand production base in ASEAN. The reason includes political stability, improved infrastructures such as roads, ports and electric power, and quality of workers. (本多)
