━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Though worldwide financial and crude oil market had paid little attention, King Fahd bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia died on 1st August and Prince Abdullah, who is half brother of Fahd, succeeded to the throne of this oil-rich kingdom. King Fahd had been on his back for ten years, and distanced himself from center of the political stage. Prince Abdullah, in effect, had been had real power of the national politics.
Though the smooth succession to the throne is emphasized, it can be said that latent tension and feud inside the house of Saudi, which has been reigning as monarch for seventy years, are hidden behind the scenes.
Experts point out that social tension has been rising in the country. Feudal system and ultraconservative religious groups are maintaining fragile balance with pressure from outside world, which urges modernization.
In Saudi Arabia, the number of people who has educated and become to know the trend of the world is increasing. On the one hand, the people want to reflect people's voices in the politics. On the other, the elite of ruling class extremely fear such changes. The economic situation is also critical. Most of the national wealth is siphoned into the kingdom, and the unemployment rate is hovering at a high revel despite the abundant oil resources. (本多)
