sit up and take notice (of something [someone]) （急に興味が湧いて）注目する 「（たいしたことはないとたかをくくってのんびり座って いた人が）体を起こして(sit up and)注意を向ける(take notice)」というところからきた表現。実際には、いちいち 「体を起こす」という動作が入るわけではなく、たんに 「（急に）注目する」「（途中から）注目しだす」の意味 で使われる。
He has long been considered a second-class writer, but his most recent novel has at last made the critics sit up and take notice. （彼は長い間、二流の作家だと考えられてきたが、彼の最新作 は、とうとう批評家たちの注目するところとなった）。

be a far cry from something （?からは）ほど遠い 「?から遠く離れた叫び声」が直訳で、「大声で叫んでも よく聞こえないほど遠く離れている」という発想。しかし、 現在では「距離的に遠い」という意味で使うことはあまりなく、 His house is a far cry from town.（彼の家は町からほど遠い） のような言い方はまれな部類に属する。ふつうは以下のような 使い方をする。
Our hotel accommodations were a far cry from what we had expected. （私たちが利用したホテルの設備は、期待していたものからは ほど遠かった）。
I'm afraid my painting is a far cry from real art. （私の絵なんて本当の芸術からはほど遠いものです）。
人間同士とか物同士の優劣を比べるような場合は「及びも つかない」といった感じになろう。
