be back to square one
ふりだしにもどる［振出しに戻る］

square oneはゲームなどの「最初のます目」あるいは「コマ
を並べた最初の状態」のことだから、字義も「振出しに戻る」
に近い。比喩を使わずに言うならbe right back where one
started from（ちょうど出発したところに戻る）だが、これも
決まった言い回し。

■ When the clinical tests failed, it was back to square one
for the researchers.　
臨床試験に失敗して，研究者たちは振り出しに戻った．
