<本多> "You can find Lawson everywhere in Shanghai." Taiji Yamada told me. He is an editor in chief of "CHAI", a Chinese information magazine, and lives in Shanghai.
<MY> “You will find Lawson stores everywhere in Shanghai,” said Mr. Taiji Yamada, a resident of Shanghai and editor of CHAI, a Chinese information newsletter.
<本多> But FamilyMart is the only other Japanese company that stands out here. Ninety eight per cent of the taxis are Volkswagens, and most cell-phones are Nokia or Motorola. Most home electric appliances are made in China and Japanese products have been rare. There was time when people gathered money from all relatives and bought Panasonic.
<MY> “Only Family Mart is the other noteworthy name to be found in Shanghai as far as Japanese businesses go.” He cited,“ Taxis are 98% Volkswagens, cell phones are Nokias or Motorolas. Homemade white goods dominate the market, while Japanese makes have almost faded from the scene. In the past people used to be so desperate for Panasonic brands that they had to scrape up the necessary money from their relatives. Those were the days!”
<本多> Local people realize that Japanese firms seem to be struggling. Then what do the Japanese firms that have gotten into China think about this? Kanji Ito, who is a president of Toppan Printing Shenzhen Co., Ltd. which sells publishing printings and package printings and has gotten into Shenzhen, says.
<MY> I was left with an impression that Japanese companies were going through a sticky patch. What do local Japanese companies make of the situation? Mr.Kanji Itoh, President of Toppan Printing (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd., located in Shenzhen specializing in printing of publications and packages has this to stay.
<本多> There are more than 500 Japanese companies in Shenzhen. Besides Honda that has been here already, Toyota and Nissan have also gotten mainly into Guangzhou recently. In publishing and printing business, competitors have come here from Hong Kong and Europe and the United States. The reason why so many companies come here one after another might be that they are drawn to China with cheap labor and allure of the market.
<MY> “More than five hundred Japanese companies have set up operations in this city. Moreover, Toyota and Nissan started to extend their business to Canton and the nearby vicinity in addition to Honda who is already based here. When it comes to the printing business, our competitors are coming over from Hong Kong, Europe and the US. Such a corporate rush into China comes about mainly because China is attractive owing to a cheap workforce and the size of the market.”
