Slow Food USAのサイトにWild Riceについて書かれてあります。

Since 1937, Minnesota has required a license to harvest naturally-grown wild rice on state-owned land. The regulations require that rice be harvested only from a canoe in the traditional manner during a prescribed season. Using a pole, the driver powers the canoe through the water, and the harvester uses beater sticks (called "knockers") to whack the mature grain heads into the canoe. On reservation land, the harvesting techniques are the same, but only Native Americans may harvest the rice.
