ハーバード卒のぱっくんを感動させた現代のサムライ明石さんの英語をここに再現。

確かに日本人とアメリカ人の触れ合いによって相手の文化も知るんですが自分の文化もそこで初めて気づくんですよね。すばらしい。その過程により新しい発見が山ほどある。

（明石）
そう　それが異文化に接触するいいところなんです。日本の良さも往々にして外国人が発見してくれるのです。浮世絵についても日本人は包み紙として外国に送ったのだけどもフランスの印象派の人たちは本当に感動したわけです。棟方志功の絵もそうでしょうし、黒澤明や北野武の映画だって外国で評価されて初めて日本人が「俺たちはそんなすごいものを持っていたのか」と気づくのはちょっとうかつだし残念ですね。

我々は変革をしながらも伝統を大切にすべきだと思います
I think we should try to cherish what is good from our tradition while we have to keep changing.

時代に即さない不要なものは忘れられ消滅するかもしれません
And some of the unnecessary out of date things may have to be forgotten, may have to be eliminated.

でも古い物と新しい物のバランスこそが大切なのです
But to maintain the precious balance between what is good in the old and what is good in the new.

それは大変難しい仕事で多くの近代文明がその適切な融合を生み出せないでいるのです
It's a very difficult undertaking. And I think most civilizations fail to produce that important synthesis.

世界の国々は異文化を学びながら自国の文化を守るという両立をめざしているんですね
So the countries around the world are in this process of taking the new things from other cultures as well as keeping what's the best in their culture.

大切なのはコミュニケーションですが相互理解のために何ができますか？
The important thing here is communication. How can we be better communicators across cultural boundaries?

（明石）
まず言葉の持つ重みと繊細さを尊重すべきです。
I think we have to respect the importance and delicacy of language.

つい流行語や省略語を使いがちですが言葉というのはもろいもので一歩間違えると相互理解などできません
And we tend to use all kinds of words, fashionable words, abbreviated words. But language is very fragile means for people to understand each other.

異なった文化　考え方　人生観があることを知るべきです
And so we should keep in mind that there are different cultures, different ways of thinking, different ways of understanding life.

我々はそれぞれ異なる存在でありながらお互い通じ合う何かがあるのです
And so we have to always keep in mind that we are different from each other and yet there may be something which also unites us.

コミュニケーションとは一人一人をつなぐと同時に互いの違いを認め合うことなのです。
So the communication is a delicate balance between what unites us and what makes us different from each other.
