翻訳に役立つGoogle活用テクニック　を読みました。この本はGoogleを英語表現のデータベースとして使う際のテクニックを書いてあります。今までもGoogleを使って表現を調べてきましたが、知らない検索方法が書いてあり役に立ちました。例えばアスタリスク(*)は任意の単語に置き換わるワイルドカードになるなどです。

では、レッツスピーク11月号14ページの、"I don't have anything on my plate"を例にとってGoogleで表現を調べてみましょう。

まず、"I don't have anything on my plate"と、文全体をダブルクオーテーションで囲んで検索します。検索結果は8件となります。

次に、"(have OR has OR having OR had) (anything OR something) on my plate"で検索します。
I don'tの部分は取り、動詞のhaveは他の形も同時に検索するために OR でつなぎます。全体は丸かっこで閉じます。anythingもsomethingとORでつなぎます。

そうすると検索結果は37件となります。少し用例が増えました。次に(anything OR something)の代わりにアスタリスク(*)にします。ここに何か任意の1語が入ります。

"(have OR has OR having OR had) * on my plate"
検索結果は2570件となります。

以下のような表現が見つかりました。検索結果を見るときは「キャッシュ」をクリックすると該当フレーズに色が付くので、見やすいです。
