Seeing these make me so excited! Thank you for sharing this :) My one year old son was recently diagnosed with Apraxia, a neurological disorder where the brain has a hard time telling his mouth muscles to move to form speech. Right now his speech therapist is trying to help him say animal sounds. I really think this would be a great tool for at home and at therapy. Once again thank you! I love these! Just to let you know, I don't think that the duck's water is on any of the patterns. But that's ok I will make one up. This is so cute can't wait to finish.
ERIN, the felt I use is from JoAnn's and is from the bolt. BUT you can also use regular sheets of felt. It does not need to be the expensive wool felt. My opinion is that my little ones are just going to play and play and play so I don't need to use expensive wool felt and cringe every time they play rough!

These are so cute!!! For my daughter's 1st birthday (she's 13 now) I did a farm birthday. On the invite I wrote 'Ol Devinney's have a farm. eieio and on their farm they had a baby eieio and the baby turned one the baby turned one Now it's time to have birthday fun. O'l Devinney's had a farm eieio. When my family laughed at me I said hey when you have a child weird things happen to you. In the process - having lots of fun - making one set for my daughter, one for a friend - don't know how you managed to make those perfect little eyes - but I'm using a hole puncher - they come out in oval shapes still barely attached - just rippin' right off - a little trim of fuzz...and perfect little eyes. you forgot to post red on the list of felt you need (the chicken) :). Also is the pig's belly red or dark pink? Do you have somewhere the amounts of each color of fabric you need?
Sorry my bad! I don't have the breakdown, because I tend to always have tons of felt on hand. 1/2 yard from the bolt should give you more than enough of each color.

I am planning to make these for a friend's 2 year old. I'm pretty new at sewing, but I think I can do it (slowly, but surely). This is a newbie kind of question, but I'm not as quick at changing bobbins and spools, so I had to ask... Did you change thread color as you went? Just used a neutral thread? Thanks for sharing!
I kind of gave up on that and just used a dark bobbin for the darker colors, and a lighter one for the others - if your tension is right, it won't show. This does take a long time - it's not a hard project, but a very time consuming one - lots of tiny cutting. what I did was cut out a bunch of them and worked them kind of factory style - did all the brown peices, then all the pink pieces, then all the yellow, etc...just make sure you lay them all out first to make sure you layer them right. Hope that helps and good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing these patterns. You are kind and inspiring. Really, I have no sewing skills, but once I saw these I bought a machine and signe up for a sewing class at our local Tech College. This is the project I'm choosing for class.
On that note, am I missing something or is there no pattern for the water around the duck's bottom half? It is totally fine if you don't have a pattern for that, I'm not trying to sound naggy/needy. I'm just trying to make sure I do this right! I'm sure I can get an A without any water. And who knows, maybe I can even free hand it!

One thing I'm struggling with: For the chicken and the duck, they each have something on top of their heads that needs to be sewn to the body, poke up the top and out front. I can't quite figure out how to do that. Can you give me any tips?
When you pin the two puppet pieces together to sew them together, just make sure to tuck in those "sticking out" pieces away from where you will sew the seam.
This set of puppets are adorable! I have completed the horse, dog, cat, 2 chicks, and duck. My daughter keeps reminding me i have the other ones to finish. :) You are so creative to have made these patterns up, and thank you for your willingness to share them!

These are great. I actually made a set of nativity puppets (Mary holding baby Jesus, Joseph, a Shepherd, and two Angels) for my church and they loved them so much they asked for 2 more sets for all their Sunday preschool classes(2's room, 3's room and 4's room). Here is it!
I have scanned and downloaded the actual patterns into this post, but I am also posting the link to download them instead. I know sometimes Google documents doesn't work for everyone so I am trying to give you two options. BUT as always, email me if neither work and I will email them to you.
There are 7 pattern pieces. Puppet PatternEars and Faces PatternFrom Behind PatternOdds and Ends PatternFrom the Front Pattern Noses and Such Pattern Farmer's Clothes Pattern

Supplies you will need:
Felt in following colors-
tanbrownwhitegrayyellowbluecreamblackpinkorange
Coordinating thread
Old MacDonald Patterns
Basic Instructions:
You will cut out each pattern piece in the color of felt depicted in the pictures of the whole set of puppets. I would have both the picture of the front of the puppets and the back of the puppets in front of you as reference.
The hardest part really will be cutting out all of the pieces. Once you have done so, group all the pieces for each animal together. I recommend putting each animal kit in a separate plastic bag.
I will be showing how I sewed the horse, but the same basic instructions apply to all the animals, with just a few variations, which I will specify.
First:
Lay out pieces that go on to the front of the puppet with 1 piece of the hand puppet, and then pieces that go on the back with the back piece of the puppet.

Second:
Prepare all the individual pieces.
-sew the EARS by laying two pieces on top of each other and sewing around the edge. Repeat with the other ear.
-sew all pieces on individually, layering appropriately...ie the white part of the horse's nose goes first and then the brown nose part goes on top.
-sew all the pieces onto the back.
-do not sew the hooves or ears on yet

Third:
Once all the pieces are sewn on, except the ears and hooves, pin the front and back pieces together right sides facing. Make sure the ear pieces are pinned in place on the inside. With the horse you will also pin the top hairs into place...HORSE HAIRS- take each strip and fold in half to make...folded edge will be pinned on inside. Sew together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Fourth:
Turn out. For all the animals but the ones with hooves, you are done.
Fifth:
For animals with hooves...
Sew two pieces of the hooves together, just on the top and side edges.
Place hoof opening over the very top of puppet arm. Pin in place.
Finish sewing around the bottom edge to secure hoof onto arm.
Repeat for the other arm.

Now you have a set of completely ADORABLE puppets that your little ones will LOVE to play with.

I know this was a VERY basic how-to. I hope that you were able to follow it. Basically making these comes down to some simple steps--
1. Cut out2. Lay out3. Sew on all pieces on front and back4. Sew front and back together5. Turn out
The only variations were really in the shape of the sheep's head and the chicken and duck arms, both which were labeled in the pattern.

These are so cute!!! For my daughter's 1st birthday (she's 13 now) I did a farm birthday. On the invite I wrote 'Ol Devinney's have a farm. eieio and on their farm they had a baby eieio and the baby turned one the baby turned one Now it's time to have birthday fun. O'l Devinney's had a farm eieio. When my family laughed at me I said hey when you have a child weird things happen to you. This was before blogging was popular and SAHMs were doing this fun on our own. :) Thanks for sharing!

I love these patterns and am so happy I found your site. I have purchased many expensive puppets and they always fall apart! These are so cute and if they fall apart from wear and tear they'll be super easy and inexpensive to replace. Thanks so much!

In the process - having lots of fun - making one set for my daughter, one for a friend - don't know how you managed to make those perfect little eyes - but I'm using a hole puncher - they come out in oval shapes still barely attached - just rippin' right off - a little trim of fuzz...and perfect little eyes. Thanks for sharing!

I just found your puppets on pinterest and I am planning on making them for my oldest three kids for Christmas gifts. My oldest child is 8 and still loves playing with puppets with his younger siblings. Thank you so much for including all of the patterns and the tutorial for making them. you forgot to post red on the list of felt you need (the chicken) :). Also is the pig's belly red or dark pink? Do you have somewhere the amounts of each color of fabric you need?

Sorry my bad! I don't have the breakdown, because I tend to always have tons of felt on hand. 1/2 yard from the bolt should give you more than enough of each color.

I am planning to make these for a friend's 2 year old.
I'm pretty new at sewing, but I think I can do it (slowly, but surely).
This is a newbie kind of question, but I'm not as quick at changing bobbins and spools, so I had to ask... Did you change thread color as you went? Just used a neutral thread? Thanks for sharing!

You can totally do this!
You could definitely leave the bobbin a neutral color like white.
I do change the spool color because I like the look of it, but a neutral color might work.

I kind of gave up on that and just used a dark bobbin for the darker colors, and a lighter one for the others - if your tension is right, it won't show. This does take a long time - it's not a hard project, but a very time consuming one - lots of tiny cutting. what I did was cut out a bunch of them and worked them kind of factory style - did all the brown peices, then all the pink pieces, then all the yellow, etc...just make sure you lay them all out first to make sure you layer them right. Hope that helps and good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing these patterns. You are kind and inspiring. Really, I have no sewing skills, but once I saw these I bought a machine and signe up for a sewing class at our local Tech College. This is the project I'm choosing for class.
On that note, am I missing something or is there no pattern for the water around the duck's bottom half? It is totally fine if you don't have a pattern for that, I'm not trying to sound naggy/needy. I'm just trying to make sure I do this right! I'm sure I can get an A without any water. And who knows, maybe I can even free hand it!

Thank you for the tutorial! I'm working my way through now as a beginning sewer (oooh, that doesn't look right ... seamstress I suppose!)
One thing I'm struggling with: For the chicken and the duck, they each have something on top of their heads that needs to be sewn to the body, poke up the top and out front. I can't quite figure out how to do that. Can you give me any tips?

When you pin the two puppet pieces together to sew them together, just make sure to tuck in those "sticking out" pieces away from where you will sew the seam.
Does that make sense?

This set of puppets are adorable! I have completed the horse, dog, cat, 2 chicks, and duck. My daughter keeps reminding me i have the other ones to finish. :) You are so creative to have made these patterns up, and thank you for your willingness to share them!

These are adorable - I'm planning to make them as holiday gifts for my little nieces and nephew. I have a question that may be obvious, but how big are these? If the sheet of felt is about 9x12, can you fit the front and back on one sheet? It seems that using one sheet each for the front and back would be too big. Thanks for your help!

These are great. I actually made a set of nativity puppets (Mary holding baby Jesus, Joseph, a Shepherd, and two Angels) for my church and they loved them so much they asked for 2 more sets for all their Sunday preschool classes(2's room, 3's room and 4's room). Wish I could upload a picture of them.

The pattern does not fit both sides on one piece of felt. Buying felt by the yard is a better deal too, then you don't have to worry about it.

Salutes to the creativity ! The in-house method of designing a cute hand puppet is simply amazing. By following the instructions mentioned on the blog, everyone can create puppets at home. If you can explain that in a video, that too will be great.

5 1/2 years after posting, your tutorial is still being used! I made the cat and dog puppets this past week (posted to my blog today and linked back to you), and have everything printed out to make an entire set for a great-nephew for Christmas :) Thanks for sharing such a great project!
