Well, it might not be the wisest thing to play in a service of worship... I tested this by imagining myself sitting next to Jesus, and watching it together. I think Jesus would say: Hey! This guy has really captured something of the essence of how fully normally human I was, and how fully God, and how wierd and amazing that actually is. He may or may not believe in me, but he understands how radical the whole thing is - and how ridiculous people sometime make it. Found this refreshing and very clever and perceptive - and funny!It really isn't offensive to Jesus, but obviously potentially offensive to anyone who wants it to be....
Thanks for sharing this Pete, as you know we (theartistandthetartist) saw his amazing full orchestra show at the O2 about this time last year. It seems to me some folks' capacity to be offended is in direct proportion to the frailty of their own (often static) system of beliefs. I guess they don't take kindly to very clever, cerebral artists like Tim Minchin taking an idea and running with it. Or even that someone somewhere may just have a different idea. Sadly too often their only recourse is sensorship of ideas or at the other extreme, threats of violence & acts of terror as is often the case with fundamentalists. Ho hum. All I'd say to anyone who gets an opportunity to see one of Tim's shows is, go, he's an amazingly talented entertainer. Hope you and your family had a good Christmas. Jimbo
Thanks Jim, appreciate you increasing my awareness of Mr Minchin. His stuff is really thought provoking, as the good Lord said, 'He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.' (KJV), quoting a Jewish saying: 'He that hears let him hear, and he that understandeth let him understand'.
