What does being gay or Muslim have anything to do with being a mayor or political figure. This is bullshit.

What I find interesting is that Canada wide, people feel that Calgary is a racist, redneck city. I grant you, it is a conservative city, but there is very little overt racism, and the conservatism is expressed mostly in fiscal policy rather than in cultural repression.

I am a visible minority and have lived in Vancouver and suburbs, Toronto and suburbs and Halifax. I have also spent a considerable amount of time in Montreal and most of Canada's (and the U.S.'s)major cities.

Calgary is by far one of the friendliest places I have been and I hope to return to live there again.

I think what most people see is the Stampede/Cowboy image, and the Conservative policy making. Come on, people... the stampede lasts for a few days of the year. Other than that, you would be hard pressed to find many people walking around in cowboy hats and boots. As for the conservative policy making, it comes with oil country.

Once thing about Calgarians which can be said is that they can be somewhat difficult to rouse. I have been to concerts in Calgary where the performers are absolutely first rate, but a standing ovation is very rare in this city. It's not a reflection of a poor performance, rather it reflects on how much it takes Calgarians to get excited about things.

I think this election actually had Calgarians excited. I am currently living in Chicago but was back visiting friends in Calgary and I was absolutely floored by how much talk and enthusiasm there was in the city regarding this election. I wished I could have voted!

It seems to me that the younger sector of Calgary was ready to have their voices heard, rather than leave it in the hands of the business class.

Anyway, bravo to Naheed and to Calgarians. This election result shows me what I new to be true of Calgary all along.
