I just finished Jeffrey Deaver's "Lincoln Rhyme" series of mysteries and thoroughly enjoyed that I seldom figured out the plot twists beforehand. The first book is The Bone Collector, although you really do not have to read them in order -- each book stands on its own just fine. They can be a bit grisly, but if you are okay with shows like CSI, you should be okay with these.
favorite book..hmm I love Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger, Sellivison from Augusten Burroughs is great,High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, hmm any David Sedaris book makes me chuckle and feel a bit more normal. Amy Sedaris has a book that I think you'd get a kick out of..I am currently reading Denis Leary's newest book I got it for Dan but stole it on the cruise...I have a lot of books I love though, they may not be your thing..
In thinking of books that I've read over the past year, the one that stands outhe most it "Winkie." It is fantactically imaginative and I highly recommend it. I'm the say way though, I love to read but rarely make the time to do so.
I'm terrible at favoritizing. Some books I enjoyed in 2008 are "Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex" by Mary Roach - funny, educational, entertaining, "Eat, Love, Pray" by Elizabeth Gilbert - not nearly so woo-woo/Oprah-book-club as I expected, and "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck which was wonderful, rich and long.

One of my goals for 2009 is to read a book each month. I love reading but hardly put time aside to do it. Also, I can never find good books. I love mysteries, most non-fiction. I hate romance novels and not big into sci-fi. I do like a good horror novel. Mainly I like period pieces from the industrial age. So, tell me-what's your favorite book? What do you recommend?

have you read slammerkin by emma donaghue? i'm not usually into historical books at all, but i really loved it. it was sad, but so well done.
