I tried this in my latest game (FashionRush: http://www.ovogame.com).
But I have been a little bit shy and this only happen after a couple of hours in the game. Basically, I have put an ad for my other game: OvO. There is some kind of story told every new level and to justify a speed increase with the main character, I came up with that:

“Hey, while net surfing a while back, I found OvO, a cool computer game. You interact with this game using your webcam. You don't need a mouse or a keyboard, you just move in front of your webcam. It's great fun but requires a lot of physical effort. If you own a webcam %1, check out OvO. I have played it a lot recently and I am now full of energy. Who said video games weren't good for you?”

I don’t know if it will work… I will tell you later...

Anyway, I won’t get some of Reflexive’s traffic. You didn’t wanted my game, you b*****d ;-)

:) I think it's a nice approach. I'd probably be even a little more overt and add something more specific, like a level editor to the game and the ability to add levels or something that points to something later in the game and suggests going online to find hints.

Hope what you did has some positive impact for you :).
