What happened to thick descriptions and other devices of interpretation? If even on a more micro scale getting the drift of the natives intersects with behavior in as real a way as prediction that is via control and coping

That seems fair.

An engineer can predict whether a certain design of automobile will run, and even tell you how fast it can go, but they can't tell you if you will run it off the road. In retrospect they could probably tell you that more red sports cars are plowed into trees on a late Friday night, but than, so can the sociologist.
