{A social network is constituted by a number of units (nodes) that are connected to each other by a defined relationship }

Yes, if you want to constrain its definition.

We've invented nothing new in the manner in which humans interact. Calling it a "Social Network" changes nothing to the fact that since time immemorial humans have been meeting for social or commercial purposes.

What we have done is accelerate the process and not innovate it. So let's not get carried away. Why?

Because this new means of interacting is fraught with problems. The contact is virtual and not real - therefore it does not conform to a process which establishes identity authenticity. Thus allowing individuals to create an unreal Virtual Social Existence. Or to make contact with individuals whose ultimate purpose is perhaps less ethical than we might expect of them.

since when did it require a virtual world for one to fake authenticity or act immoraly? the problems you state are not a result of this new technology.

The term "social network" doesn't mean only "virtual relationships." Social networks exist in the real world. You are right that "since time immemorial humans have been meeting." The term for that is social network. Remember: Facebook is not a social network: it's a website.
