I came across E.P. Thompson's concept of agency via the term "Eigensinn" (~ stubborness, sense of oneself) shaped by the German microhistorian Alf Lüdtke.
Since then, I am asking myself how important and articulated was the concept "agency" within the writings of E.P. Thompson. Perhaps, you can answer this question?

My impression is that it's not so much a question of Thompson's use of the term "agency" as it is the active characteristics he attributes to the English working class that constitutes his view of the role of agency in history. Fundamentally, Thompson's use of the word "making" in the title -- "The Making of the English Working Class" -- encapsulates his view that this process was one of self-definition and self-creation for this tradition of workers. That is what made them agents: they created their own identities, organizations, myths, and literatures; they were agents of their own destinies.
