i think i agree with you...what i've gathered from this post is that social progress has and does occur, can be defined and measured in generally acceptable terms, and its up to we the people to think about it, make decisions and vote on what we feel is a better way to live.

I would suggest further that consensus is closer than we may think on many issues in terms of progressing society, its just a matter of breaking the hold of the creators and beneficiaries of current policies (special/corporate interests) who have thus far effectively deployed divide and conquer tactics.

"Cumulative effects of an extended series of reforms may lead to outcomes that were never anticipated" sounds like a cautionary tale to be ignored at our peril. We should be careful what we wish for especially when social progress/reform stumbles into Utopian territory

Great post, Daniel. I've read several of your blog posts and I am very impressed and happy that I stumbled across your blog. I'm going to read a few more of your posts because I find your ideas on social science and human behaviour intriguing. I am writing a blog similar to this in the sense that I am giving my ideas and opinions on social issues, as well as giving input onto how we can improve society. It would mean a lot if you could check it out and give me feedback! http://improvingsocietytoday.blogspot.ca/
Keep writing Daniel, I'll stay in touch.
