cooperative relationships generate more dopamine in brain for some people in small group settings and they seek to repeat high dopamine (pleasurable) experiences. While competetive experineces are pleasurable to some, for some people the cooperative experience is more pleasurable in small groups than competetive experience. The processes themselves (not just utilitarian results) have their own differential rewards. Jerry Edmonds Wish I could test this theory.
