Given this "isolated zealot" has a popularity rating greater than 80% with the Russian people I don't think they will be removing him soon.

That is because, as is well known in US foreign policy circles, almost all Russians regard Ukraine as the keystone to Russian security. It is simply a matter of survival that it not fall into enemy hands.

Apparently you don't share Tolstoy's view of "great" men's lack of relevance to history. I think if you focused less on Putin's supposed shortcomings and more on the historical and recent geopolitical events you would realise that any competent Russian leader would be reacting in a broadly similar way.

Thanks for your comment, Shocker. I don't agree with the statement that any competent Russian leader would wage atrocious, aggressive war against Ukraine. The consequences for Russia are surely going to be extremely negative. As for isolated -- I'm referring to the fact that Putin appears to be cut off from almost all advisors, military and civilian, because he doesn't want to hear bad news.

I wonder what you think they would do in the circumstances.

I just went to kremlin.ru (can you reach it?). The first story is a video conference between Putin and the permanent members of the Security Council on the 29th.

Fake news? Maybe, there is a lot of it about at the moment.
