One of the most remarkable aspects of Chalmers Johnson's path (he was my first undergraduate adviser, by the way) was his migration from a careful defender of U.S. foreign policy and critic of the student movement during the 60s to a position as an outspoken and vociferous critic of American foreign policy and global military power, and its effects domestically on democratic institutions and norms. From an entirely different starting point his views began to converge with those of former Berkeley colleagues, like Sheldon Wolin, with whom decades ago he seemed to have little in common. The trajectory of Johnson's thinking speaks volumes about the dangerous developments that have taken place over the last 50 years, and it's a welcome testament to intellectual courage and willingness to challenge orthodox judgments, including one's own.
