Interesting but the author has not driven a block off Woodward to Cass Street to see the other Detroit. Woodward is a narrow corridor leading from the downtown to the Wayne State/Medical area. Venturing away from this corridor leaves one in the middle of abandoned buildings and people. Indeed, even the downtown has abandoned 10 and 15 story buildings. I read and hear stories about the rebirth of Detroit and would like to believe them. But they ignore the balance of the 74 square miles of the city. Detroit is on the verge of becoming illiquid, has just cut employee wages by 10% and has lost many more than 10,000 jobs in the last year. I don't see it being any better, and likely much worse in 10 years.

There is a lot of negative in Detroit, that fact is undisputed. But if you truly drive the three blocks over to Cass, you will find a much different corridor than what existed 10 years ago. There are parts with vacant structures but also several portions with thriving business, starting with Canine To Five and ending in New Center.

The city's governance problems are only one part of the equation. Enough entrepreneurs and residents have decided to stop waiting for the government to become their savior and they have started re-investing in the city. Outside of the central business district and Midtown, you see retail districts that are beginning to thrive despite our elected leaders. Just look at Rosedale Park, the University District, Vernor between 75 and Livernois as examples.

Again, not everything is pretty in Detroit. I've lived here too long to become a hope porner. But I will say that there is more to the Detroit story and I hope you continue to follow the progress.
