Here in Brazil we're also facing an unprecedented level of right-wing violence, however the debate on how to deal with this is quite fractured on the left. Some people are betting on the support of our institutions, trying to "return" to the way it used to be in the mid 00's. I'm not convinced about this possibility given the current state of our economy, as those mid 00's here in Brazil were possible due to a class conciliation approach which worked for a portion of Brazil's elite.

To the eyes of the general populace, this discourse of institutional stability sums up to being part of the Establishment. And while those mid 00's were better than what we're facing now, they are still full of contradictions and exploitation. In the end, it's the same as defending a glorified boot instead of an ugly militaristic boot. I know, I know... the glorified boot is nicer, but it is still a boot.

I believe the left should follow this logic of local engagement: https://medium.com/@BComuGlobal/america-needs-a-network-of-rebel-cities-to-stand-up-to-trump-7c07202e7cc2

Excellent article. Though perhaps lacking the appropriate level of urgency to reflect how dire the situation has become. I've been fighting neo-nazi(literally in some cases) in the USA for thirty years or so, and the...explosion we've really seen start as a trickle in 2013 has turned into a flood. They're coming out of the woodwork, as are the demagogues. All over the globe. The only places we're not seeing this is in places where there already is authoritarian regimes in place(right AND left leaning).
Now I am a rationalist, a skeptic, and a big believer in the methods of logical positivism...But I feel compelled to ask. Are they linked somehow? We have far exceeded what can be explained probabilistically. The fact that all of them surged in roughly the same time frame across the democratic geopolitical landscape reduces the chances of random emergence to < Laughable. But in my investigations I can find no overt signs of a central instigator. Even though i'm seeing very similar messages make their way into various languages. But that may be due to social media cross pollination. Or may not be too. It's really hard to shake the feeling of something sinister moving behind the scenes.
My working hypothesis is the central element is social media itself. Created an environment where algorithms flooded regular folks with fear signals and force multiplied perceptions of threat. I mean, nothing increases "engagement" quite like panic, and dread. But i'm just a regular joe with a large consumptive diet of non fiction and hard science stuff. But seems to me obvious there is a central guiding influence behind this. In murphy's laws of combat operations and in military tacstrat you're taught "first occurence is an accident. Second occurence is probably still an accident. Third occurence? That ain't no accident. Find out why!"(paraphrase). So the question becomes is it an emergent feature of the technical landscape like in my hypothesis, or is there someone(s) behind the curtain working the levers? Or something else entirely I don't know about to account for it?
...And how might we find out? Maybe bringing big data and machine learning in somehow?
What do YOU think? Not sure you'll ever read this, but maybe you will. Maybe even answer! Feel free to send me an email if you'd prefer.
